SCANI Statement on North Belfast Incident
Statement from the Sudanese Community Association Northern Ireland (SCANI)
The Sudanese community in Northern Ireland is deeply concerned by the recent violent incident in North Belfast. Our thoughts and sincere prayers are with the injured man and his family at this difficult time, and we wish him a full and speedy recovery. We stand in solidarity with the victim and with all those affected.
We are grateful for the warmth, kindness and welcome we have received from the people of Northern Ireland. Many Sudanese families have found safety, friendship and the opportunity to build a better future here, and we deeply value the support shown to our community.
At this difficult moment we encourage unity, understanding and calm. We strongly condemn all forms of violence, racism, hatred and division, and we trust the relevant authorities to ensure that justice takes its course.
Violence and criminal acts should never be associated with any religion, nationality, ethnicity or community. As members of the Sudanese community, we stand alongside our friends and neighbours across Northern Ireland in calling for justice to be served, and for all necessary measures to be taken to prevent such crimes and acts of lawlessness in the future.
We also urge people not to allow the actions of one individual to undermine the strong relationships that exist between communities across Northern Ireland.
